Dr Michael Marshall

Dr Michael Marshall is a Research Associate of the UK Collaborative Centre for Housing Evidence (CaCHE).


Dr Michael Marshall is a Research Associate at CaCHE. He is based at the University of Sheffield, where he completed his PhD in 2023. He also holds an MA in Social Research from University of Sheffield, and a BSc in Social Policy with Government from the London School of Economics. Prior to his PhD Michael worked in a housing association and a social enterprise. While working in a housing association Michael gained experience in both front-line and research focused roles.

Michael’s research interests include evaluating housing systems, policy and practice; housing governance; inequalities within housing; and decarbonising the built environment. His thesis focused on the implications of financialisation and regulatory reform for the supply of decent housing in the English housing association sector. He has also collaborated on research understanding barriers to the roll out of heat pumps; an evaluation of the Decent Homes Programme; and co-authored a book chapter on the relationship between housing and welfare in the UK. As an interdisciplinary and mixed-methods researcher, Michael’s work often combines advanced quantitative methods with qualitative case studies.
